Places I've Worked
This is just a quick round up of the places I've worked or visited through my
work over the last 18 years or so!

Machrihanish was the start of my career. I worked at
Machrihanish for almost 3 years,
it's on the West coast of Scotland, near Campbeltown, a surprisingly
remote but beautiful place. |

I once worked at Boulmer, in Northumberland for 4 weeks! during
which I stayed in a pub in Alnwick,
a long up & downhill cyle that was! My
days off were often spent in Newcastle. |
|
The Met office here has closed, reports are produced by ATC using
automatic equipment.
|
Stansted, outside London was home for 2 years, I lived in
the village
and cycled to the Airport
where I worked.
While I was there I spent much of my time off in and around London, where I
went to Church. Cambridge was another favourite day out. |

|
While at Stansted I spent a month or so at Gatwick. While
I worked at the Airport,
I was staying in Coulsdon,
only cycled a couple of times! |
|
Gütersloh is now the sole British Met office
remaining in Germany, servicing the needs of the remaining British Army
units throughout Germany.
|
Gütersloh has been my home,
3 times (1986-90, 6 months in 1992, and 1998 - present), I also worked at nearby
Detmold (which has now closed) for a year or so. |
|
With the demise of all the RAF bases in Germany and their Met
Offices, Dusseldorf is the nearest regular weather report.
|
I spent another year at Wildenrath which
has also now closed,
as well as short spells at nearby Brüggen and Laarbruch (which are also
now closed). |
|
RAF Leuchars
website |
After leaving Germany the first time I moved to Leuchars
on the East coast
of Scotland, near St Andrews. I lived in Cupar and I went to church
in Dundee. This as close as I've ever
managed to get to my home in Glasgow! |
|
|
While I was at Leuchars I did several trips "down South" to
the Falkland Islands, 7 trips in all, from 7 weeks to 7 months in
duration! Although I lived and worked at Mount Pleasant I was a
regular visitor to the church in Stanley. |
Although many maps show the Falklands as "disputed", the
people that live there are in no doubt that they are 100% British.
Diplomatic relations are now much better with Argentina although they
still maintain their claim on the "Malvinas", and other
British S Atlantic territories such as S Georgia and the S Sandwich
Islands.
|
The Army have now pulled out of Grytviken, currently the nearest
weather report is a automatic report from the British Antarctic Survey
base at Bird Island at the extreme Western end of South Georgia.
|
The highlight of my trips down south was my visit by ship to South
Georgia! it might not be the end of the world, but you can see it from
here! There is a brilliant book about
South Georgia you can buy. |
Some 70% of South Georgia is permanently covered in snow and ice.

Back in Scotland I've also spent a month or two at Kinloss
on the
Moray Firth, before I returned to Germany. The few nights I stayed up
North, I stayed in Forres. |

Another month or so was spent at Manston
on the English South coast, near Ramsgate,
where I stayed. |

|
In Nov 2000 I moved to Belfast Airport in
Northern Ireland, however the Met Office screwed up again and my post
was rapidly disestablished leading to another move in July 2001

|
Between Belfast and Lossiemouth I spent a month on
Tiree, a very beautiful island in the inner hebridies of Scotland
|
|
There is a 1 in 4 (ish!) chance that the report above
was originated by myself!..
|
Since August 2001 I have been living and working here
in Lossiemouth. I go to church in Elgin.
